Case Study Description

A research team in France deployed a PME C-Sense Logger (0-2000 ppmv), along with a multi-parameter EXO1 probe (YSI), to investigate the changes in heritage identity of saltwater wetlands ecosystems caused by flooding. The experiment was conducted in Pertuis Charentais, France, coastal marshlands and included in situ measurements of pCO2 in saltwater along with measurements of the pH, salinity, oxygen concentration, temperature, and turbidity in the wetlands.  The study aimed to help researchers understand and predict the future of coastal wetlands, particularly the evolution of the heritage identity in response to flooding.

Location and Sampling Frequency

The team selected two main measurement points, at the entrance to the Fier d’Ars and at the level of the Vieux Port Channel at the bottom of the bay. Both locations were monitored for a year (2018) to capture seasonal data. Measurements of the biogeochemical parameters mentioned above were recorded every minute on 24-hour cycles by the C-Sense and EXO1 probes.

Conclusion

The initial analyses revealed notable spatio-temporal variations for all measured parameters at both measurement sites. The most compelling data was the tidal variations and strong control of pCO2 by various processes (eg photosynthesis). The wetlands were supersaturated with CO2 during the winter months, and undersaturated in spring. The variation in measurements was in part due to the influence of upstream marsh areas and tides from the Atlantic Ocean.

Product Description

The C-Sense Logger is a submersible, portable device that records pCO2 over a period of time. Data are collected at a variety of sample rates, selected by the user, and stored internally. Data are offloaded to a computer via a USB cable for easy viewing and analysis.
