The Coastal Observing Research Development Center at Scripps Institution of Oceanography maintains a PME temperature chain at their research pier as part of an ocean observing program.

The data are contributing to research on coastal temperature changes on both short and long term time scales. The temperature chain consists of fast response thermistor nodes spaced 1 meter apart and a bottom mounted pressure for measuring wave height. It is cabled to a pier based computer and data is sent real-time to the web for public display. Monitoring full water column temperature not only allows scientists to capture internal tides and seasonal temperature fluctuations, but it is also a great way to check surfing conditions.

Information can be found at http://cordc.ucsd.edu/projects/Piers/SIO/TChain/. Scripps is integrating the temperature chain system into a pier-based ocean sampling network with funding from the International Seakeepers Organization.
